Vintage Feature – It’s Been a Crafty Kinda Week!

I love to craft but recently haven’t had the time nor inspiration to start something new. But things changed when I was asked if we had any vintage cigar boxes for an upcoming event. We do have several but thought a few more might be needed. So when we saw a display of new boxes at a  local thrift store, we imagined they could be made to look vintage – didn’t quite know how – but heck, we picked up six. (Of course, now we wish we had bought the whole bunch!)

When the days got shorter and the nights longer, the crafting gene was activated. With a bottle of decoupage product in the craft cabinet, all I needed were images. It didn’t take long to find them – authentic public domain labels in full color. From beautiful ladies to trolley cars and air balloons, these vintage cigar box labels from the early 20th century are amazing!

I printed two of each – for the outside and inside lid – and steadily worked on these every night. This was my first decoupage project so I had a lot to learn. Some of the sides are painted and some are decoupaged. A few have parts of the original labels; others are totally masked.

The two final steps were to add felt feet to keep the bottom dry and a ribbon hinge so the lid could stay upright. Although none of them are perfect, they sure look pretty!

Of course, these aren’t vintage cigar boxes, but they remind us of those times long ago. They are now on our shelves ready to add a little pizzazz to your event!

Vintage Adventures – Mountain Wedding Weekend

Whew! We’ve been on the road again this weekend and this time we headed to the beautiful mountains of Hendersonville. Our destination was the Kenmure Country Club and the vista was spectacular. The foliage was tinged with yellows and oranges, the cool autumn weather was refreshing, and the company couldn’t have been more perfect.

After loading the van to the hilt with place settings for 175 guests, Priscilla and I began our westward journey Thursday afternoon. Along the way we stopped for lunch at a restaurant that just so happened to be near a thrift store    and arrived, via the more scenic backroads, to Kenmure in the early evening.

The tables were all ready for us and we meticulously set them with our vintage plates and goblets. The head table donned our blue and white collection while the guest tables featured a more eclectic mix of patterns. These photos are missing the floral arrangements and soft candlelight so we’ll be sharing an updated gallery in the weeks to come. Can’t wait to see them!!

Following a restful night at a charming AirBnB home, we excitedly began exploring the thrift stores in the area. Over the course of three days, Priscilla and I browsed through 8 or so stores – some high end, some more junk, and all worth the time! What was our find of the weekend? A medley of  terrific vintage napkins – including ones with some groovy prints for our growing bohemian offerings – and a gorgeous set of china from Germany.

These last two weekends have shown us that traveling to destinations is a service we can happily accommodate, especially if it includes a day or two of exploration and delicious meals shared with a kindred soul! Thank you, Taylor and Priscilla, for two delightful back-to-back weekends!

Planning a wedding in the “beyond” region of our studio and want a vintage look? We may be able to help!

Southern Vintage Table Events – The Durham Bride

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

A new blog and wedding resource is now online! The Durham Bride, hosted by Tiffany Englert, owner and event planner behind The Details Events, will be offering advice and vendor spotlights for “brides, grooms, and fans of the Bull City.”

Tiffany contacted Southern Vintage Table this summer and asked if we’d like to help with a photo shoot to kick off her new service. Of course, we were delighted by her invitation and she came to our studio to select the tableware. She decided on our vintage blue and amber goblets, layered vintage china plates, silver-plated flatware, two large compotes for the centerpieces, and silver candleholders. As you can see, her tablescape design was gorgeous!

She assembled a fantastic team of vendors, and with all the details in place, the shoot took place at the Kings Daughters Inn. Originally a residence for elderly single women, today this bed & breakfast inn adjacent to Duke’s campus is an elegant space for individual guests or large groups, including wedding celebrations.

The shoot was designed for the traditional bride and inspired by the stone from which the grand buildings on Duke campus were built.  As Tiffany explains, “Quarried from nearby Hillsborough, NC, the stone displays a rich palette of blues, grays, tans and rust colors that give the buildings a richness and warmth that otherwise would have been difficult to achieve.  Just in time for Fall palettes, the rich slate tones and warm copper tones are perfect for a southern Fall wedding!”

Southern Vintage Table Events – Afternoon Tea Reception

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Three wonderful things happened this week!  First, we received gorgeous wedding photos of Jenn & Teague’s June wedding from Rebekah Senter Photography.  Second, Jenn and Teague’s wedding “Romantic Vintage Wedding at Rigmor House,” was published in Borrowed and Blue! And, third,  SVT has a business listing in Borrowed and Blue with two featured events. Wooo Hooo!

Our part in this beautiful occasion was to provide the vintage tableware for the Friday tea reception after the outdoor ceremony. Jenn wanted an English feel with all the tableware in blue and white so we had blue & white and white teapots for each table, blue & white china, and blue goblets. Our vintage napkins and silver flatware competed each place setting.

The reception plan was that we would set the tables inside the space in the morning and after the wedding, the guests would come in for tea. Well, the weather was not cooperative that weekend so Plan B was on – have the wedding ceremony inside and then quickly “flip” the room for the reception.

To help with this transformation we organized everything on the bar in the kitchen hallway, ready for the “flippers” to pick up. The teapots were lined up per table, plates stacked, and napkins folded. In the kitchen, Jenn and Teague’s family and friends were filling the tiered stands and serving dishes with the delicious treats for the buffet.

Although we weren’t there for the flip, Erica, owner of  Folie à Deux Events, assembled a great team.  As soon as the romantic ceremony concluded, they moved ceremony furniture out and reception tables in, dropped the linens, and then set the tables. Erica told us Jenn was so happy when she saw the transformation from this sweet ceremony to ….

Southern Vintage Table Event – Treat Yourself to A Business Lunch

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Big or small, we are always delighted to set a pretty vintage table. This week we were invited to help with a business lunch at Ruby’s Place, a country homeplace in Orange County, and we love how it turned out, especially with the bright, cheerful centerpiece designed by Rodwell Roots!  With a catered lunch by Catering Works, the business colleagues had a quiet, private haven to eat lunch while discussing ideas and future business opportunities.

Vintage Feature – If You Open A Studio, They Will Come…

In the movie, Field of Dreams, voices speak to corn farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) that “if you build it, he will come.” Listening to their message, he builds a baseball diamond in the middle of his corn field, trusting that his dream to reconcile with his dead father will come true.

Southern Vintage Table

We may not have heard the voices, but we did believe moving into the studio would mean our clients would come. And they have. This month we have been busy meeting with engaged couples, mothers and brides-to-be, and planners about their upcoming events, showing them our inventory, and offering ideas for their table design. Our dream is being realized and we couldn’t be more excited!

If you are planning a wedding reception, family dinner, baby shower, birthday party, or any special event, we will make a date for you to come, too. As Captain Janeway would say, “Do it!”

Southern Vintage Table Event – A Re-Celebration of Rebekah & Joey’s Wedding

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Two years ago my hard drive crashed. Yikes. I knew I should have had a backup but did I? Nope. I called my computer guy to see what he could salvage and, of course, he asked if I had a backup. Thoroughly embarrassed,  I admitted that I did not. That’s when he gave me the bad news – that he might be able to recover some of the data but not all. Thankfully, he did get a lot of files back with strange file names that I had to rename and reorganize, but I knew many files were just lost. Lesson learned – I got set up on iCloud and another backup drive.

A couple weeks ago, as I’m looking for the photos from Rebekah and Joey’s September 2014 wedding and couldn’t find them, I remembered why – the hard drive crash. Because this was one of our first big weddings and it turned out so beautifully, I contacted the photographer, Anna Kirby, to see if she could help. And help she did. Gratefully, I downloaded new copies.  So, today’s post is a re-celebration of Rebekah and Joey’s gorgeous wedding, set at the Saint Thomas Preservation Hall in Wilmington, photographed by Anna Kirby Photography,

Lastly, there are a few friends who always will remember the front steps of Saint Thomas Preservation Hall – this one’s for you!

Vintage Feature – We’re Back with Lots to Share!

Our July blog hiatus has ended and there’s so much we want share with you! With help from Jami and Priscilla, we’ve made much progress on our studio, inside and out, and we think it looks amazing. So, how did we do with our three July goals?  We invite you to read on!

Goal one was to make a farm table top for the workbench so clients could experiment with different place settings and tablescapes. Instead of the top, though, we now have an actual table, set up in the back, that works even better.

This mother-daughter team came to our studio a few weeks ago and experimented with a variety of different looks. After admiring several possibilities, their lovely reception table plan emerged!  So far we’ve had four clients use this design table to plan their reception tables and several more have appointments to visit us in the next few weeks. Yay!

The next item on our list was to finish and print our brochure.  After my business mentor shared some key editing suggestions, we had a small batch printed.  More editing was done, a reorder placed, and now we are waiting for them to arrive!

Southern Vintage Table

The third and final goal – finish moving our inventory. Whew – we are VERY pleased to declare “DONE!” After three months of steadily packing and unpacking, everything is in the studio and now we’re busily staging and organizing.

Our opening photo and the one below show vignettes in our studio created by Priscilla.  We love them all but the second one down is crazy fun!!  We took the glassware out of the crates, lined the shelves with white lights, and shazam – they sure do sparkle!

Southern Vintage Table

Three goals on our list all checked off!  There’s one more thing we want you to see and it’s the final thing we brought to Studio 238. She happens to be the sassiest, baddest, smartest, wisest, and outright best character EVER created – ta da

Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager!

“Ma’am is acceptable in a crunch but I prefer Captain.”

She’ll be here to greet you and keep us focused on providing the very best service to our clients.  Yes, you can count on us, Captain!

Vintage Feature – Three Assignments for July

We are taking a blog break during the month of July but that doesn’t mean we won’t be hard at work!  In fact, we have three assignments to have finished before the month’s end and here they are:

1 – Construct a farm table top.

When clients visit our studio, we want them to explore our vintage offerings and be able to set sample table place settings for their guests. We recently added this work table, as seen below, and we’ll be making a wooden farm table slab to place on top. Can’t wait to get the power tools out and start on this assignment!!

2 – Finalize and print our business brochure.

With all of the beautiful photos from the many talented professional photographers, it’s been so delightful to work on this project. We still need to add more text and the photo credits but it’s close – at least this draft.

3 – Finish moving our inventory.

Yep, we’ve got more to pack and move to the studio, including this heavy vintage store shelving unit. Although this is our least favorite assignment, it is the one we can’t wait to finish!

Check on us in August to see how we did on our assignments.  ‘Till then, wishing ya’ll a fun, carefree July!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Rain or Shine, Devon & Brian’s Wedding Day Was Wonderful!

Today we have some spectacular photos from Devon and Brian’s April wedding. Their Duke Chapel ceremony and Merry Hill reception, captured by Jessica Arden Photography, demonstrate how fun a rainy wedding day can truly be!

After getting married at the grand Duke Chapel, the wedding party moved to the pastoral beauty of Merry Hill Farm to celebrate. For their reception meal, this lovely couple used a mix of our vintage floral patterns with blue and white china to create a colorful table for their guests. On the dessert table and decorated with delicious cupcakes, our vintage tiered stands presented a yummy display for friends and family. Although their celebratory plans had to change a bit when the evening rain began, perhaps a little rain can create the best memories!

“Thank you so much for providing the amazing china and being such a pleasure to work with for our wedding.  The plates were so beautiful and the tables looked amazing when everything came together!  It ended up being rainy on our wedding night, so we had to move everything under the tents and lost some of the pretty Merry Hill scenery, and I was so happy that we had beautiful table settings to add some color and charm to the tent space!  And don’t worry, we ended up having the most fun ever despite the rain!” – Devon

Gosh, this final photo at Duke Chapel is simply perfect! Congrats, Devon and Brian, and best wishes for a fun-filled future together, rain or shine!
