Vintage Feature – We’re Back with Lots to Share!

Our July blog hiatus has ended and there’s so much we want share with you! With help from Jami and Priscilla, we’ve made much progress on our studio, inside and out, and we think it looks amazing. So, how did we do with our three July goals?  We invite you to read on!

Goal one was to make a farm table top for the workbench so clients could experiment with different place settings and tablescapes. Instead of the top, though, we now have an actual table, set up in the back, that works even better.

This mother-daughter team came to our studio a few weeks ago and experimented with a variety of different looks. After admiring several possibilities, their lovely reception table plan emerged!  So far we’ve had four clients use this design table to plan their reception tables and several more have appointments to visit us in the next few weeks. Yay!

The next item on our list was to finish and print our brochure.  After my business mentor shared some key editing suggestions, we had a small batch printed.  More editing was done, a reorder placed, and now we are waiting for them to arrive!

The third and final goal – finish moving our inventory. Whew – we are VERY pleased to declare “DONE!” After three months of steadily packing and unpacking, everything is in the studio and now we’re busily staging and organizing.

Our opening photo and the one below show vignettes in our studio created by Priscilla.  We love them all but the second one down is crazy fun!!  We took the glassware out of the crates, lined the shelves with white lights, and shazam – they sure do sparkle!

Three goals on our list all checked off!  There’s one more thing we want you to see and it’s the final thing we brought to Studio 238. She happens to be the sassiest, baddest, smartest, wisest, and outright best character EVER created – ta da

Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager!

“Ma’am is acceptable in a crunch but I prefer Captain.”

She’ll be here to greet you and keep us focused on providing the very best service to our clients.  Yes, you can count on us, Captain!

Vintage Feature – Three Assignments for July

We are taking a blog break during the month of July but that doesn’t mean we won’t be hard at work!  In fact, we have three assignments to have finished before the month’s end and here they are:

1 – Construct a farm table top.

When clients visit our studio, we want them to explore our vintage offerings and be able to set sample table place settings for their guests. We recently added this work table, as seen below, and we’ll be making a wooden farm table slab to place on top. Can’t wait to get the power tools out and start on this assignment!!

2 – Finalize and print our business brochure.

With all of the beautiful photos from the many talented professional photographers, it’s been so delightful to work on this project. We still need to add more text and the photo credits but it’s close – at least this draft.

3 – Finish moving our inventory.

Yep, we’ve got more to pack and move to the studio, including this heavy vintage store shelving unit. Although this is our least favorite assignment, it is the one we can’t wait to finish!

Check on us in August to see how we did on our assignments.  ‘Till then, wishing ya’ll a fun, carefree July!

Vintage Feature – Move Update!

It’s almost been 2 months since Amy and I first got the keys to our studio and we are getting so, so close!  The sign is on the window, more shelves filled, inventory shuffled, Amy’s shelves and flower cooler are in, and – the most exciting news for SVT – the commercial dish machine is being installed tomorrow!  Whoop, whoop!

Here’s the day we got the keys….

… and here’s today!

We are working from our new space and meeting with clients as we continue to move in. Please let us know if you’d like to come by and we’ll schedule a time to meet!

The next update will be our last when everything is in place!

PS – Brainstorming with the Yayas is always fruitful.  Thanks for the “Studio 238” combo name – we love it!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Kelcey & Isaac’s Vintage Wedding

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

We have been looking forward to Kelcey and Isaac’s wedding day for over a year and yesterday was the day!  All of the designing, planning, and organizing culminated in one of the most beautiful weddings we’ve ever seen. With our vintage place settings set on Greenhouse Picker Sisters‘ farm tables and Springwell Gardens‘ oh-so splendid flower arrangements, the reception area at Merry Hill Farm was transformed into a gorgeous sea of color and textures.

At each table were vintage vessels filled with beautiful floral bouquets, including a collection of teacups collected by Kelcey for her wedding day.  Springwell Gardens also created lovely aromatic bouquets in our vintage silver creamers, milk glass vases and compotes, and stoneware pitchers.

Final vintages touches included framed table markers, biscuit/tea tins, and books, Votives and candles in vintage brass candle holders added the sparkle of light at each table for the evening of fun and celebration.

Now we can’t wait to hear all the details and see the evening through Kelcey and Isaac’s professional photos. It was such a pleasure being part of this wedding day and working with a team of incredible vendors. We don’t have the complete vendor list but we’ll share them when we post the “real” photos!

Thanks to my sweet sisters, Rowena and Sharon, and dear friend Priscilla, for your help yesterday!  And, you’ll want to know that the “bury the bourbon” Southern tradition came through with a gorgeous North Carolina day!

And, of course, a heartfelt congratulations to Kelcey and Issac!  Best wishes for a loving, joyful life together!

Vintage Flatware Rental NC

Vintage Feature – Mixing & Matching with Bakelite Flatware

Vintage Flatware Rental NC

We have been gathering pieces of a “new” vintage flatware style – vintage Bakelite (and similar) – and nearly a hundred knives and dinner forks are now available to mix with our vintage stainless and silver-plated collections. With colors ranging from white, cream, butterscotch, and cocoa, they blend in nicely with most color palettes.

Vintage Flatware Rental NC

No doubt, patterns from our vintage casual china collection are perfect companions with our vintage stainless flatware, but when a piece or two of the Bakelite is added, the look is taken to a new level of awesomeness. We absolutely love it! Originally we didn’t think elegant silver-plated flatware was a good fit with Bakelite, but, ding-dong, we were so wrong!  It also looks fantastic!

Take a peek at samples of our collection and how they look alongside the stainless and silver-plated pieces. We think you’ll be smitten with this new vintage look, too!

Vintage Adventures – The Story of a Teaspoon & a Jar

Part of my fascination about anything vintage is the history they embody – the companies that made them, the folks who bought them, the homes they were in, the time period they existed. Appreciating these objects as artifacts, I am thrilled when I uncover an interesting story connected to a new find. This happened last week when I found four teaspoons in the flatware bin at a local thrift store.

They stood out because of their silvery sheen and ornateness and, when I picked them up, they were nice and heavy. As usual, I didn’t bring my glasses so I couldn’t make out the maker, but the pattern was new to me. When I got to my car and found my glasses,  I read the mark – King’s Hall Silver 1088 – and quickly searched the name on my phone. Ding ding!

King's Hall Silver

My research began with a community board on Ebay.  Someone posted a question about these teaspoons and here’s Susan’s response:

… all I could find on this spoon were pages and pages of Home & Garden, Country Life, Suburban Life, … 1911 magazine ads for Kerr Glass Mfg. Economy jars. Kerr was giving away 3 of these spoons with every case of jars and 1 with a dozen caps. No doubt the use of the number 1066 was to attract attention for it was in the year 1066 that William the Conqueror invaded England. His descendants resulted in the Plantagenet dynasty that ruled England for over 300 years.

With this response, I found several ads that ran during 1911.  Here are two from Country Life in America and Suburban Life.

King's Hall Silver - Kerr Glass

King's Hall Silver - Kerr Glass

Mystery solved – these King’s Hall Silver teaspoons were a free gift given out circa 1911 by Kerr Glass to drive sales of their canning jars, a kitchen staple well known to all of us. It may be difficult to read, so here’s an excerpt from the ad.

Cut out “Hand in Jar” trademark, like above shown, appearing on either end of each case of one dozen Economy Jars and mail it with 14c. in U. S. stamps to cover cost of packing, postage, etc., and we will present to you one Full Size King’s Hall Silver. 1086, famous sectional plate silver teaspoon, made by the manufacturers of the best silverplate in the world. The richest family in the land has no finer, richer, nor more beautiful silver plate than King’s Hall Silver, 1066.

From here, I wanted to learn more about the Kerr Glass company. My research uncovered many more twists and turns – here’s a quick synopsis of the highlights.

  • In 1903 Alexander Kerr started a fruit jar company in Portland, Oregon called the Hermetic Fruit Jar Company. The jars were made by the Illinois-Pacific Glass Company, located in San Francisco.
  • The Great Earthquake of 1906 struck San Francisco and 80% of city was destroyed. Miraculously, the Illinois-Pacific Glass manufacturing plant survived.
  • Kerr opened his first glass manufacturing plant in Kansas in 1909.
  • Kerr fell in love with a young stenographer in his office, Albertina Sechtem (who was 28 years younger), divorced his wife, and married her in 1910. The local headline read, “Rich merchant divorces wife.”
  • During 1911 Kerr Glass Manufacturing ran ads for free teaspoons with purchase of jars and lids in numerous publications.
  • Albertina Kerr contracted typhoid and died months after giving birth to a son in October, 1911.  On her deathbed she asked Alexander to “look after motherless babies, too.”
  • Kerr donated their home to the Pacific Coast Rescue Society to help orphans and single mothers. Over the next hundred years, this contribution proved to be a seed to provide support for young children, single mothers, and individuals with disabilities. Today the Albertina Kerr Center, located in Portland, Oregon, supports individuals with developmental and physical challenges.
  • In 1913, Kerr married his young secretary, Ruth Kalbus, and they had 6 children. Kerr died in 1925 from pneumonia contracted while collecting Community Chest Funds.
  • The eldest son from Kerr’s first marriage ran the company until his death in 1930.  Alexander’s third wife, Ruth, took over to become “the first woman executive in the glass-blowing industry — if not one of the first women executives in manufacturing — in the United States.”  (Healthy Canning)  She ran the company until her death in 1965. Under her direction, many women were promoted into executive positions and her company would become one of the two largest canning businesses in the United States.
  • In 1937 Ruth Kerr established the Bible Missionary Institute that would eventually become Westmont College, ranked as the 90th “America’s Best Colleges List 2013” in liberal arts colleges by US & News Report.
  • Two notable contributions to the canning industry by Alexander Kerr were the production of the first wide-mouth jar and the invention of the metal flat disk used to seal the jar.

From fruit jars, to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a scandalous divorce and marriage, free teaspoons, centers to help orphans and children with developmental needs, and one of the first women executives in manufacturing – whew! Now, this is a pretty good story, huh?

Vintage Feature – Join Us On Instagram!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC“So, are you on Instagram?” she asked.
“No,” I replied, “but we’re on Facebook and Pinterest.”
“Oh, if you were on Instagram you could see how the tables turned out.”
“Dang,” I’m thinking. “Do we really want another social media account to manage?”
The answer turns out to be, “Yes, indeed we do!”

That was one year ago when a wedding planner explained that she would be posting photos of our vintage centerpieces on her Instagram account. We really, really wanted to see how they turned out so that night we did it – we opened up an account. It didn’t take long to understand why folks love this mobile social media app.

Instagram may be our favorite way to share our wares and see what others are doing. We still appreciate our connections through Facebook and Pinterest, but we absolutely love that Instagram is all about photos. For a visual business like ours, when we post our recent find or photos from an event, the post is fed to all of our followers. They get to see what we are doing and, in turn, we get to see what’s new with all the folks we are following.  With the hashtag feature, users can search for photos on a topic or trend (like #vintageblueandwhite) and connect with us and others who have used this hashtag to describe their photo. It’s quick, uncluttered, and a visual treat. And, did we mention fun?

Blue and White Screen Shot

After one year, we are happily posting and sharing photos, making new connections, and visually exploring the world through others’ experiences. We would love to bring you along. Follow us on Instagram (@southernvintagetable2) and if you don’t yet have an account, consider joining the Instagram community.

We have to warn you up front – it’s addicting. No joke –  you’ll find yourself checking for “likes” on your posts, looking through your feed, and searching hashtags for things you love – like #pugs or #succulents or #foodogs  or even a place, like #ncmountains – and you’re hooked. A good thing, however, is if you are looking for an inspiration, waiting for an appointment, or drinking your first cup of coffee in the morning, you have Instagram to fill that time in such a delightful way!

Here are couple of things you should know before you sign up. Instagram is meant to be a mobile app which means you take photos from your phone and upload them from your phone. On a laptop you can create and view your account, edit your descriptions, “like” others posts, and do searches but you cannot upload photos. There probably are ways around all of that but the notion of “instant-ness” is its intent. Another cool feature is that you easily can share your IG posts to your Facebook so your FB friends don’t miss out on that cool thing you just did or saw.

Lastly, you can make your account private which means only folks you have invited can view your photos but you still can view accounts that are public. In other words, you can look through the Instagram window without opening your Instagram door!

For those who may not be ready to take the leap, we now have our Instagram feed coming in our home page and we also placed it below for you to get a quick look. Listen to Eleanor and jump in!

Do one thing every day that scares you.”

Vintage Feature – Our First Pinterest Board “Wish List” Order!

Southern Vintage Table
These are just some of the vintage lovelies used in our three events this week!

In spite of the rainy weather here in NC we’ve had a productive week at Southern Vintage Table. First, our china was picked up for a shoot designed by Southern Weddings at a lovely West Virginia venue. More will be coming on this, for sure. Then, we received two new orders for the week – one for a wedding and one for a bridal shower. And, as a final very bright spot to the week, we were asked to help with the wedding of a dear friend whose daughter is getting married next June. We do love being busy!

We are very excited, of course, to help with each of these events but two things made the bridal shower a pretty special request. Not only were we thrilled to work with Maria again – we helped with her wedding two years ago – but she became our first client to create a Pinterest board wish list for the items she wanted from our inventory. Yay!

We shared this planning idea in a recent post, “Vintage Tip – Collaborate with Us to Create a Wish List, and it worked great. Maria created a board for the shower, pinned items from our inventory, and added notes to the pins.  The part about adding the notes was Maria’s brilliant touch, and we appreciate this tweak to the process.  We easily provided a quote and started packing. As we said before, it’s easy, peezy and we look forward to collaborating with you!

Thought we’d end today’s post with one of our favorite photos of Maria & Jonathan’s reception tables.  Don’t you love those vintage goblets?  See more from this beautiful wedding here!
