Vintage Feature – A Vintage Postcard’s Inspiration

Poppy Postcard

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

~ We Shall Keep the Faith by Moina Michael ~

Memorial Day has come to signify leisurely fun – a 3-day weekend, parades, family cookouts, and the official opening day to the summer season. Many of us, however, overlook the solemnness of this holiday as a day of remembrance for our veterans.

I wanted to capture the historic essence of Memorial Day and began searching for an inspiration in our vintage postcard collection. I came across one with a beautiful bouquet of red, white, and blue flowers. Perfect, I thought. As I began researching the background of Memorial Day, I serendipitously found the inspiration for today’s post – the remembrance poppy.

The red poppy as a symbol for Memorial Day began with the poem, “We Shall Keep the Faith,” written in 1918 by Moina Michael, an American professor.  Her poem was in response to  “In Flanders Fields”, a poem penned by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, as a tribute to a friend who died in WWI.  Why red poppies, you may ask? Here’s what I learned from Wikipedia.

“The red poppies that McCrae referred to had been associated with war since the Napoleonic Wars when a writer of that time first noted how the poppies grew over the graves of soldiers.[45] The damage done to the landscape in Flanders during the battle greatly increased the lime content in the surface soil, leaving the poppy as one of the few plants able to grow in the region.”[46]

After teaching a class to disabled veterans at the University of Georgia, Moina Michael realized these men needed more help than they were receiving. Having read McCrae’s poem and then writing her own, the idea of a red poppy as a representative icon was conceived. She fundraised using silk poppies to help raise awareness and monies for the veterans and in 1924, the remembrance poppy was adopted by the American Legion Auxillary as a symbol for those who have died serving their country.

My quest to find something meaningful to share on Memorial Day began with a vintage postcard – what a wonderful coincidence to discover its floral symbol of remembrance.

And, to add a little vintage china in this post, here’s a new vintage set featuring red, white, and blue found by my friend, Trudy. Won’t it look terrific with blue & white patterns?

Southern Vintage Table Event – Vibrant, Vivid, & Vintage Dinner Party

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

We totally love setting the tables for big family events like weddings and family reunions, but we are also absolutely delighted to help with intimate celebrations.  These smaller gatherings allow us the opportunity to showcase some of our speciality china and decor collections. And, this past weekend we were so pleased to set the table for a festive dinner party.

Our client was hosting a wine and dinner party featuring Spanish wines and dishes. Her vision included vivid spring colors of pinks and greens and we knew our lovely hand-painted pieces from Blue Ridge Pottery and Stetson China would be the perfect fit. Paired with our vintage printed tablecloth, these bold, vibrant patterns from the 1940s-1960s set the perfect mood for her guests. Our table creation was vibrant and stunning, ready for a fun evening with delicious food and Spanish wine tastings!

Southern Vintage Table Event – A Babies’ Shower!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Delicious food, pretty decorations, fun games, colorfully wrapped gifts, and two beautiful pregnant cousins – yep, it’s a babies’ shower!  This past weekend the Heath women and friends all gathered at Tonya’s lovely home to celebrate the upcoming arrival of two babies – Allison & Steven’s baby boy in May and Sarah & Alex’s little girl in June .  How wonderful!

With theme colors of teal, pink, and gray, the banners were hung, tulips arranged in vintage white stoneware pitchers, mixed and matched vintage gray & white dishes stacked, and drinks chilled in our sweet pink enameled baby tub.  The yummy food and Caroline’s adorable cupcakes were presented on our vintage serving dishes and the party commenced.

In traditional baby shower fashion, we ate, chatted, and laughed – a bunch! We also loved playing Amanda’s party games – Baby Bottle Scratch-Offs, Price is Right Baby Shopping List, and Don’t Say Baby – before ooohing and ahhhing over the darling baby gifts. Needless to say, a good time was had by all.

Now we wait for the babies to arrive and we are all so excited to meet them.
Congratulations to Sarah & Alex and Allison & Steven!

People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one.

Thanksgiving Tables

Southern Vintage Table Event – Bass Family & Friends Thanksgiving Reunion

It was the perfect day for our annual Bass Family Reunion!  This wonderful tradition began in the mid-60s by Wiley and Susie Mae’s children – Christine, Aline, Weldon, and Wiley Jr – as a time set aside each Thanksgiving for the extended Bass family to share a meal and reconnect. Every year since, we have continued this tradition, and although many dear family members are no longer with us, we remember and honor them by being together.

For this year’s gathering, Southern Vintage Table set the tables with our vintage blue & white china patterns and amber glassware collection. Our mix of creamy-white table linens were covered with burlap runners and adorned with petite arrangements of greenery, votives, and pumpkins. Large bouquets, created by Rowena, were placed at the entrance table and on the food tables. (Many thanks to the setup crew – Sandy, Amanda, Travis, Allie, and Rowena!)

With the 60+ family members and friends bringing their favorite dishes for the buffet line, we enjoyed an incredible feast. (Just for the record, some of those dishes are assigned to certain chefs in the family because, we all know, they make the BEST … turkey & dressing, baked ham, mashed potatoes, collards, sweet potato casserole, chicken-n-dumplings, deviled eggs, chocolate eclair cake, coconut cake, carrot cake, and many more …)

For the newcomers, we loved seeing you and hope you’ll come again.  To the folks who were not able to make it, we missed you and hope to see you Thanksgiving 2016!  As shared in our previous post from Thanksgiving 2013, “once again, the Bass Family came together on Thanksgiving.  We hugged, we feasted, and we parted, feeling content and connected.”

PS – We must remember to get a group photo next year!  Now, who will be in charge?  (Insert smiley/winky face here…)

Vintage Feature – Feeling Joyful!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NCEach week we wait, calmly and confidently, for an inspiration for our Sunday post.  Sometimes it comes easily because we have lovely photos from a recent event or we’ve been adding new features to our website. Other times it’s a cool vintage treasure we think folks will love to see. But, this time, our inspiration was special – we believe it was a message from the cosmos!

Earlier this week, as a couple of ideas were stewing in my head, I received an email from Wedding Wire that we had a terrific new review from a client – we were thrilled! Two days later we hear from the caterer who hired us to help with a surprise retirement tea party – the client loved our china!  Then, as the saying goes, “good things come in threes,” the next day we receive notification of a comment on a blog post from the bride’s mother with a thoughtful note about our services.  Dang!  Three wonderful compliments in less than a week – indeed, a cosmic signal to share these gracious sentiments!

So, gosh & golly, here are the kind words from recent clients that pleased us oh-so much!

~ Wedding Wire review
“She was wonderful to work with and her products were beautiful. Probably the best money spent for the wedding! She always responded within 24 hours of an email (often within a few hours). Highly recommend.”

~ Comment shared by caterer about a surprise retirement tea party
“Everything went great and looked beautiful! She was so surprised and absolutely LOVED all the china that we had!”

~ Blog post comment
“It was a perfect combination of country vintage. Thanks to Southern Vintage Table for the beautiful vintage china, glasses and silverware. It was very impressive and received lots of compliments… What a sight it was. Everyone together made the Bride’s vision come true. Thank you so much-Mother of the BRIDE”

“…it is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.”– David Steindl-Rast

We are feeling joyful!
