Southern Vintage Table Event – A Marriage Blessing, Baptism & Tea Party!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Last Saturday was a beautiful, reverent and memorable day for Summer’s family. After converting to Greek Orthodoxy this past spring, Summer and Andrew had their marriage blessed or “crowned” and their twin boys were baptized.  You’ll love how Summer explains this family occasion.  “We’ve been married 15 years, but we are revving up to get heavenly hitched in an Orthodox wedding sometime this summer. Why? Beauty, sacrament, and so we can baptize our babies.”  And, because drinking tea is a big part of their family’s life, serving tea in beautiful vintage teacups had to be part of this celebration and that’s where Southern Vintage Table entered the picture!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Following the ceremony, friends and family were also treated to a lovely spread of healthy, delicious food prepared by caterers Molly and Raven.  Plated on vintage tiered stands and serving dishes, the food included bacon and pickle deviled eggs, arugula and cucumber tea sandwiches, stuffed dates with chevre, pistachios, and honey, a variety of cheeses and fruits, chocolate almond cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream, gluten-free brownie balls, and honey-fig cupcakes. Southern Vintage Table also provided a charming mix of vintage luncheon plates, silverware and tea napkins for the guests.

Summer also revealed there was another reason tea was important for this celebration – her new novel!   “I am a writer, and my second novel, Tea & Crumples, comes out in October 2015. As you can tell from the title, tea is a big part of the plot. Tea is also a huge part of our family’s life together. That’s why we wanted to have a beautiful tea party to celebrate our twins’ baptism and our wedding. Your napkins, silverware, plates, and cups made it so special. It was perfect, exactly as I dreamed. Thank you!”

Wishing you many blessed years to come Summer, Andrew and family.  Southern Vintage Table absolutely loved being a part of this memorable family event! Check out Summer’s blog, Writing Like a Mother, for more information about her upcoming book. It’s pretty darn awesome!

For Molly and Raven, this was their first professional event as caterers. Congrats! Molly specializes in vegetarian, vegan, and allergen-sensitive cooking. She would eventually like to do local and sustainable farm-to-fork cooking and likes catering for people who share her ideals about the relationship between food, community, and environment.  “I have to say, you’re a really great person for caterers to work with- washing the dishes was actually really fun when we got to look at and exclaim over each beautiful teacup!”  I know exactly what you mean, Molly.  Thank you!  And, one last shoutout – Linda, you rock!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Vintage Milk Glass is Perfect at a Wedding

A wonderful setting for an outdoor wedding is a lush garden, filled with beautiful greenery and colorful flowers. The North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill has it all – the gardens, flowers and a upscale rustic reception room with a balcony overlooking the landscape. This is where Kate and Jeff were wed last weekend and it was beautiful!

Months ago Kate contacted Southern Vintage Table about renting some of our vintage milk glass for her wedding reception tables.  She wanted a mix of vases and compotes, all sizes and shapes. Of course, the pristine white of the milk glass makes it a beautiful centerpiece for any table but for a wedding, well, it’s simply perfect.

Kate chose Fernrock Farm, a local flower farm, to provide the  flowers for this special occasion. I delivered the vases and compotes to Carrie and she, along with helpers Gerri and Trudy, created stunning succulent arrangements and bouquets for these vintage pieces.

Southern Vintage Table Event – A Field Dinner Experience

Envision yourself in the middle of a quiet country farm field, away from stoplights, traffic and city noise.  The sun is setting and you begin to notice the symphony of night critters. But, you are not alone. You’re with your favorite friends, feasting on made-from-scratch delicious food prepared by a talented chef. A delightful assortment of chilled beverages are ready for all to enjoy. Sound wonderful?  Yes, it was!

The vision for this outdoor dining experience came to Sharon and Tammy of RSVP-Events over a year ago  They wanted to host an outdoor dinner in Ruby’s field on a beautiful fall or spring night. They invited Southern Vintage Table, Donovon’s Dish and American Party Rentals to join together and offer this evening as a raffle prize at their monthly Triangle NACE meeting. When Heather’s name was called, she was ecstatic. Imagine hosting a party for your friends and all you have to do make a guest list and show up!

The night for the farm dinner was set for a Sunday evening in early June. RSVP-Events designed the event and prepared Ruby’s field.  A path and party area were mowed, twig light balls were hung, candles lit, flowers arranged, signs made and furniture set in place.

After consulting with Heather and then Christian from Donovon’s Dish, Tammy came to Southern Vintage Table to plan the table settings. Pairs of classic blue & white china patterns were chosen to go down the farm tables provided by American Party Rentals. To complement the blue & white china patterns, vintage clear glass salad plates and goblets were selected. We also chose pairs of serving dishes for the delectable dishes – BBQ chicken, fresh salad, string beans, quinoa, succotash and sweet potato biscuits.

We used a set of vintage hammered aluminum trays for the chicken, an assortment of blue & white bowls  for the side dishes and bread baskets for the family-style meal.  Glass compotes, which once held Big Top Peanut Butter, were selected for the individual strawberry shortcake servings. Tammy loved the vintage aluminum mugs for her flower and herb arrangements and the wooden cake stands were perfect to group the small bouquets on the table.

Now everything would have been absolutely perfect except one little thing – a light summer evening rain. But, in actuality, it worked out beautifully. Ruby’s field, graced with the magnificent colors of the setting sun, was center stage for the evening’s opening appetizers, drinks and guitar music by Daniel Wray. Dinner was served in the living room of Ruby’s home place and then guests returned to the field under the glowing twig lights and evening stars for their fresh strawberry shortcake dessert.

It was a magical evening – the food was wonderful, the natural pastoral setting was inspirational and guests were very appreciative. These field dinner experiences are offered by RSVP-Events with limited availability. If you’d like to host a unique dining experience for your guests, contact Sharon or Tammy. They’ll be happy to talk with you and, of course, so will Southern Vintage Table.

Southern Vintage Table Event – A “Spirited” Southern Tradition Delivers a Perfect Day!

With Ralph’s bottle of bourbon buried at the wedding site, the perfect day was delivered!  According to Southern Livinglegend has it that all you have to do to insure fair weather for your outdoor wedding is bury a bottle of bourbon, full and upside down, on a beautiful, sunny day weeks before the wedding date. After Mary, the quintessential Southern lady, read that bit of Southern tradition, it just had to be done for her and Ralph’s beloved daughter, Melanie.  Well, it magically worked because Melanie’s and James’ wedding day was magnificent – perfect temperatures and a gorgeous Carolina blue sky.

After the wedding ceremony, Ralph digs it up!

Southern Vintage Table was thrilled to be a part of this celebration!  Our first assignment was to set up a lemonade greeting station for guests as they arrived to this joyous occasion. With a charming assortment of vintage punch cups and two vintage punch bowls, Mary’s Yaya friends – Cis, Louise, Jami, Pat and I – served lemonade and welcomed guests. Rock Quarry’s vintage 1950 truck was parked next to us, joyfully bedecked with wedding photos of the bride’s and groom’s families. Southern Vintage Table‘s vintage suitcases and trunk helped complete this endearing tribute.

The second station was the coffee bar.  Pairing the vintage teacups, Cis, Jami and I arranged them on the table. We also displayed several on the rustic shelf above. What a beautiful table with the teacups all lined up!  At the end of the evening it was fun to see which teacup guests selected for their coffee as they enjoyed the delicious wedding cake baked by Sweet Memories Bakery.

Perfect day, perfect wedding, perfect love and all oh-so Southern!  More photos coming later from photographer, Martha Manning.

Congratulations, Melanie and James!  We all wish you a life full of love, happiness and joy!

We also want to send best wishes to Jill and David who were married on this gorgeous day in Graham.  Thank you so much for inviting Southern Vintage Table to be a part of both of your wedding days.

Southern Vintage Table Event – Miss Julia’s Birthday Tea Party

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental

We were all oh-so excited about Miss Julia’s birthday tea party!  Turning 5 is pretty awesome all by itself but when you add family, friends, vintage teacups and hats to the celebration, the excitement just escalates!  With the help of their family and Southern Vintage Table, Erin and Jeremy planned a fun-filled morning for their sweet daughter and her friends.

Our party preparations began at Raleigh’s Baileywick Park. Erin and her family crew – Phyllis, Jerry, Rowena, Doug and Melissa – transformed the shelter into a delightful, charming tea party atmosphere with organza drapes, balloons and paper lanterns. A “happy birthday” sign and a beautiful bright-colored bunting sewn by Jeanine were hung to greet the party guests.

The two picnic tables were covered with vintage pink and blue tablecloths. To coordinate with Erin’s happy spring theme, Southern Vintage Table chose a wide array of teacups, dessert plates and serving dishes with most of the big, bold patterns coming from the mid century era.  A hat station was created with a vintage trunk and suitcase and the bright colors of our vintage hats blended in beautifully. I imagine all of the previous owners of those lovely hats were so tickled, as my mama used to say, to be a part of this celebration!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC
Party Hats Sign and Trunk

Choosing the right hat was definitely the fun part of dressing up for the tea party and these girls got it just right. They all look so chic!  After making that important fashion decision, it was time to enjoy the healthy snacks – petite peanut butter sandwiches and croissants, fresh fruit and fruit filled miniature pastries. The vintage teapots were filled with ice-cold lemonade and ready to serve!

Dessert was Erin’s handmade cake created for Julia’s tea party. With a lovely garden scene filled with gummy flowers, chocolate rocks, a fountain and even a miniature tea party, it was definitely a showpiece!  After admiring the cake, making birthday wishes and blowing out candles, it was gift-opening time.  I’m not sure who enjoyed this part the most – Julia, who loved every single birthday present – or the rest of us, reveling in the delight of a darling young girl!

Happy birthday, Miss Julia and thank you for inviting us to be a part of your special day!  From birthday tea parties to wedding receptions, Southern Vintage Table is ready to help you celebrate those memorable, sweet life events!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Linens, Lace, & Lingerie Bridal Shower for Melanie

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

A more beautiful day just wasn’t possible! The cosmic powers delivered a warm, spring green day for Melanie’s shower – the grass, trees and flowers were all freshly watered by the previous day’s rainstorm and the sun was sweetly gleaming on the lovely backyard of Louise’s country home. The stage was perfectly set for Southern Vintage Table and the Yayas to host this happy occasion!

We first set up our sawhorse table with cedar planks as our tabletop. My friends from Fernrock Farm, Carrie and Bill, helped me design this rustic look and I love it!  With the pink bordered vintage tablecloth and bunting, it’s the main feature of our rustic Country Farmhouse decor theme.  We used lots of vintage wooden items as food stands as well as a vintage radio and scale.  With Jami’s stunning tiered floral centerpiece we achieved just the look we wanted – quaint, country, pink and sweet!

The other two main tables were then designed.  The accessories’ and dessert tables featured a beautiful mix of vintage china, silver, napkins, serving pieces and decor. I especially love how the yellow flowers trellis up the vintage candelabra.

Pat’s top-secret-recipe cake – it was as delicious as it looks!

As Pat noted, sweet Godiva was guarding the dessert table for us!

We covered our dining tables with vintage tablecloths and Jami created individual floral centerpieces for each. Louise’s rustic picnic table was treated with a beautiful double-ring vintage quilt!  Perfectly lovely!

Our final two stations were the mimosa bar and gift stand.  At the mimosa bar we arranged our juice-filled vintage decanters in an enameled pink tub and a pink vintage Coleman cooler chilled our champagne. A mix of vintage pink, green and clear glasses were selected for guests to make their own special drink. With the striking red rose bouquet and a mix of vintage decor, the final display was beautiful!

With stacked vintage trunk and suitcases along with vintage wooden boxes, the gift stand was created. We tucked in a few special vintage items such as the chicken and egg basket filled with the flowers, the copper sifter and sedum-filled vintage dishes. I especially love the vintage linen tree with the chalkboard sign!

With vintage teacups filled with petite arrangements, the bride and bridal party left with a sweet reminder of our wonderful occasion – a beautiful day with friends and family celebrating Melanie’s and James’ upcoming wedding.  How sweet is that!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Mixing & Matching with Family Heirlooms

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Recently Sarah called Southern Vintage Table to help set her table for her family’s traditional Passover feast. She also had an enchanting request – to include her grandmother’s china and her husband’s grandmother’s crystal in the eclectic place settings.  I instantly loved her idea!  Including Ann’s vintage china pattern and Thelma’s crystal from the 1930s was a wonderful tribute to their blended family at their Seder table.

After Sarah and I shared ideas, I borrowed pieces of Grandmother Anne’s beautiful china, Phyllis by Noritake.  For this important family ritual, I wanted each guest to have one piece of Anne’s china so I designed the table settings in pairs. The first pair had Anne’s dinner plate, the second had the soup bowl and the salad plate was used in the third.  Using this schema, I mixed and matched the place settings down the table.

To further accent with Sarah’s grandmother’s china, we tucked saucers under the sedum teacups provided by Southern Vintage Table and arranged them down the table. We also placed Grandmother Thelma’s delicate wine glasses at the adult place settings. With Sarah’s tulip centerpiece, the lovely Seder table was ready for her family and friends.

Southern Vintage Table Event – A Sweetly Vintage Wedding

It was a radiant April day at the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens in Fayetteville. The lovely grounds were covered in colorful spring blooms, the sun was shining, a gentle breeze was blowing and two people were ready to share the rest of their lives together. What a joyful day for a wedding!

I first met Ashley via email last October when she told me she found Southern Vintage Table‘s website and wanted to know more about our vintage china.  We corresponded through the months about her wedding and shared different ideas about the table setting. I knew she and I were planning something very special.

During this time I had discovered the charm of vintage postcards from my friend, Priscilla.  We used them at her Christmas party and I fell in love with the look.  I found a way to make a stand from vintage forks and started a collection of vintage cards.  When I asked Ashley if she’d like to feature some on her table she was delighted because she also collected vintage postcards. It was a serendipitous moment!

With mixed and matched vintage patterns, we set the table with a dinner plate, salad plate, silverware, goblets and a trio of sweet vintage postcards.  Ashley’s choice of flowers, wedding favors and linens completed a stunning table display for her guests.

The myriad of place settings featured soft hues of green, blue and pink.  Vintage goblets of green, blue, pink and clear accented the vintage china.  The vintage silver flatware also included different vintage patterns.  As I gazed at the beautiful, cheerful tables I envisioned the many dinner tables these pieces had once graced. I believe their individual history brings eloquence to such a joyful day.

We also provided vintage dessert plates and forks to serve this gorgeous wedding cake. Love the flowers and the Precious Moments couple on top!

Southern Vintage Table & RSVP Event – “Twice As Nice” Baby Shower for Lindsey

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

No doubt, we all love weddings, birthday bashes and anniversary parties. We get to spend time with friends and family, eat delicious food and celebrate an important life event with the people we love. But perhaps the sweetest and most special family celebration is a baby shower, when we honor a new mother-to-be and her new baby.

When friends and family learned Lindsey and Chad were expecting a baby everyone was thrilled. Then the news got even more exciting – they were having twins, a boy and a girl!  How sweet is that? Her party-planning friends at RSVP-Events along with her sister, Marylee, were so delighted to plan a shower for one of their own and this celebration was going to be wonderful!

With the theme, “Sugar & Spice, Twice as Nice”, a peach/blue color scheme and food provided by Catering Works the party plan was in full swing. Tammy sewed buntings in a variety of peach and blue fabrics and strung them across the mantle and the gift table. With fabric covered hoops and beautiful flower arrangements, she created a dramatic mantle display for this special occasion.

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

To continue the theme, mini buntings decorated the spectacular cake and a vintage rusty child scooter on the front porch to greet guests. When I saw this scooter at Lockhart’s Trading Post, I knew it would be perfect at a baby shower.  Rudy, the owner, said he saved it from becoming scrap metal. Thank you, Rudy!  Isn’t it charming?

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

To set the table, Southern Vintage Table provided a beautiful mix of vintage clear glass plates, milk glass compotes, silver dessert forks and blue Mason jars. Lindsey’s favorite drink was chilled in a vintage pink enameled baby bath tub and, with the themed straws, the drinks were served!  I have to share the story of this tub – it was a gift from a friend and was actually her baby tub. She thought it would be great to use to chill drinks and she was so right!

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

After feasting on deviled eggs, spring vegetable and roast beef rolls, vertical crudités, fruit kabobs and cinnamon straws, guests were invited to pose for a picture at the photo station that was stocked with vintage hats, hat boxes and a table mirror provided by Southern Vintage Table.

Put on a vintage hat, don a pair of silly glasses and the smiles keep coming! Tammy set this up with her iPad, printer and a couple of huge balloons for a backdrop.  After the photos were printed, they were displayed on the vintage bamboo ladder for everyone to enjoy.  At the end, guests left with a photo memento of the special occasion. What a terrific idea!

This is my favorite photo of the day – Lindsey, Honey and Marylee. Honey is Lindsey’s and Marylee’s darling grandmother.

Next came gift opening.  After many oohs and ahhhs when the adorable baby clothes and gifts were unveiled, it was cake cutting time.

Isn’t this an amazing cake with the two baby peas on top?  What was inside delighted us all – raspberry cream cake on the top tier and chocolate cake underneath.  Yummy!  We all had a hard time deciding which we liked best but what a delicious dilemma!

Congratulations, Lindsey and Chad!  We are so happy for you and can’t wait to meet your new babies!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Vintage Postcards Capture the Christmas Spirit

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

I’ve known Priscilla for well over 20 years.  Our friendship began at Culbreth Middle School – she taught 6th grade science and I taught 8th grade science.  We both loved to find and decorate our classrooms with all kinds of natural things – pine cones, turtle shells, skeletons, rocks, bird nests – whatever we could find or get. As kindred nature and vintage enthusiasts, our tablescape visions for her annual Christmas party were totally in sync.

When we were planning for her party, Priscilla brought out these two incredibly huge pine cones that were at least a foot long!  Of course, I wanted to know what kind they were and where they came from.  Well, it turns out they are sugar tree pinecones that come from a tree that grows in California.  She saw them at a science convention and thought they were amazing and wanted some for her classroom. So she wrote a letter – a time before email – to a colleague who lived in California and asked him to please send her a few sugar tree pine cones so she could share them with her students. You see, Priscilla has this way about her that when she shows you something she loves, you instantly fall in love with it, too – that’s what made her such a terrific teacher.  She loved science and so did her students. Shortly after the letter was mailed, a boxful of these exquisite beauties arrived at her door and were part of her classroom for many years. Who would have known that these same pinecones would be adorning her Christmas table years later and I would be helping her set the table? As you might imagine, we shared a good laugh about it all!

In addition to the many varieties of pinecones around her lovely home, she also has a wonderful collection of vintage Christmas postcards dating to the early 1900s. The artwork and the handwritten notes on the back portray a time we all love to imagine. Here are just a few. I included one photo of the handwritten message and address on the back – no zip code!

With her collection of pinecones and vintage postcards, and the vintage milk glass glassware, white linens, china and silverware from Southern Vintage Table, our table design was ready.  We both knew it was going to be exceptionally special!

On the day before the party, the first table we set was in the dining room. We decided to use a vintage green tablecloth with vintage white doilies to accent the rich brown of the pinecones. The vintage postcards were scattered about for guests to enjoy.  What a terrific touch to this vintage tablescape!

Our next set of tables were in the living room.  Here we used crisp white vintage tablecloths and with the Christmas tree as a backdrop, the end result was just beautiful!

Desserts, punch and teacups were ready for guests after their delicious meal! Don’t you love the bold poinsettia pattern on the vintage tablecloths?

Thank you, Priscilla, for inviting Southern Vintage Table to be a part of this special day for you and your friends.  Merry Christmas to all and best wishes in the new year!
