Southern Vintage Table Events – Vintage Milk Glass Centerpieces

We have some pretty photographs to share today from Brian and Heidi’s June wedding, courtesy of KM Photography.  Filled with gorgeous flowers from Fernrock Farm, a local flower grower, a trio of our milk glass vases and compotes took center stage on each of their reception tables. How beautiful is this?

Vintage Feature – Coral Roses & Vintage Vases

Southern Vintage Table Vintage China Rental NC

Last week we revealed a peek at Katie and Ryan’s rustic, vintage wedding reception and had planned to show you more this week but a few gorgeous coral roses got in our way. You see, last Sunday I went to pick up the vintage decor elements used on the reception tables but I left with so much more – bouquets of coral roses, a few white tulips, and even one forgotten bridesmaid’s bouquet designed by Katie’s wonderful wedding planner and florist, Amy Wurster of Knots ‘n Such. What an unexpected treat!  So, I took advantage of these lovelies and started making simple arrangements in some of our vintage vases just to see how much the container played a role in their presentation. I know what you’re thinking; that’s some hard work ahead!

First, the featured photo above is a vintage planter I simply love and couldn’t wait to make an arrangement in it. I cut a small piece floral mesh wire (thank you, Jami!), shaped it inside, and started plopping the roses in between the wire holes. Gosh, I adore this centerpiece!  I then tried two more planters we have in our collection at Southern Vintage Table – a Tiffany-blue and a yellow with little feet. (Incidentally, we have a very nice collection of planters which help create low, lush centerpieces for any table.  And, with the mesh wire tucked inside, it’s pretty easy!)

Next up, the traditional vase – the original milk glass vase with the forgotten bridesmaid bouquet and a table centerpiece with a few small vases. I couldn’t believe how perfectly the marble egg matched the color of the coral roses!

The next set of arrangements are in pots – two topless teapots and a metal pot with an attached lid. From delicate to rustic, a vintage pot makes a wonderful vase!

The final trio of unexpected vintage vases – a perfectly tarnished brass goblet,  a peach cookie jar (thanks, Priscilla!) and a colorful tin – create their own unique look. Don’t you love these? Admittedly, my favorite is the vintage tin. (Psst – the secret to using a tin is to tuck a cup inside to hold the water for the flowers – you’d never know unless I told you!)

Undeniably, these beautiful coral roses would look stunning in a paper cup, but the container adds another ingredient of beauty, interest, and whimsy – wouldn’t you agree? And, yes, playing with roses and preparing for this week’s post was a bit too much fun to be called work. 🙂

Now, back to Katie and Ryan’s post – I’ll share more of my photos next week but I can’t wait to see and share some of the professional shots when they come in. ‘Till then, have a terrific week!

Southern Vintage Table Event – Vintage Milk Glass is Perfect at a Wedding

A wonderful setting for an outdoor wedding is a lush garden, filled with beautiful greenery and colorful flowers. The North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill has it all – the gardens, flowers and a upscale rustic reception room with a balcony overlooking the landscape. This is where Kate and Jeff were wed last weekend and it was beautiful!

Months ago Kate contacted Southern Vintage Table about renting some of our vintage milk glass for her wedding reception tables.  She wanted a mix of vases and compotes, all sizes and shapes. Of course, the pristine white of the milk glass makes it a beautiful centerpiece for any table but for a wedding, well, it’s simply perfect.

Kate chose Fernrock Farm, a local flower farm, to provide the  flowers for this special occasion. I delivered the vases and compotes to Carrie and she, along with helpers Gerri and Trudy, created stunning succulent arrangements and bouquets for these vintage pieces.

Vintage Milk Glass Vase with Dried Flowers

Vintage Feature – The Beauty of Vintage Milk Glass

Milk Glass Vase Rental

I remember the first time I heard the term “milk glass.”  My dear sister-in-law, Cathy, was packing up her house to move to the Outer Banks.  She showed me a vase and explained it was hobnail milk glass.  I recall thinking “what a cool name” and I think I even had her spell it since I had never heard “hobnail”, but it wasn’t love at first sight for me.  Of course, I said something like, “hmmm, that’s interesting” but I didn’t quite understand why anyone would collect a knobby white vase.  Like many twists in life, I never imagined I’d be building a collection of milk glass today for my business, Southern Vintage Table!

Since then I’ve educated myself a bit on this classic vintage glassware. I’ve learned that milk glass has been around since the 1500s but the term “milk glass” wasn’t coined until the twentieth century.  Although “milk glass” was popularized by the white milk-like color, the word “milk” doesn’t necessarily mean white; it means the glass isn’t transparent, but translucent. Here’s a little bit of chemistry trivia – they use either tin oxide or bone ash (yep, ashes of real bones) to give the glass that milky white color!

“Opal glass.” as it was called, comes in white, brown and black as well as in hues of green, yellow, pink and blue. It was invented in Venice in the 16th century, spread to France and England and then to America.  First considered collectables by the wealthy, many American companies began making less expensive milk glassware for the masses.  One highly, collectable and popular variety is Jadeite, which has a beautiful light green color.  Our collection is only white but I’m always on the lookout for the other colors.

Probably all of us have seen the many styles of milk glass vases. I’ve collected small bud to large bouquet vases, with wonderful designs and textures. Here are some from our collection!

I love the vintage compotes and serving dishes in the milky white color.  Food just looks extra delicious against the pure white of the dish!

Vintage milk glass goblets and small compotes are also lovely and can be used as either vases, planters, or small serving dishes!Milk Glass Compotes Rental

The purity of white vintage milk glass is a classic choice for so many special gatherings such as weddings, receptions, showers, anniversaries, and dinner parties.
